A new opportunity for Middle School students
Beginning this fall, local Middle School students (grades 6–8) may live in the dorm part time, spending Monday morning through Friday afternoon on campus with weekends at home. Families might consider this option for a variety of reasons: It’s a perfect opportunity for students who want more than a daytime dose of the one-of-a-kind camaraderie that comes with Middle School life. It’s also a good way for students who could use a nudge toward more independence to cultivate self-reliance in a safe, nurturing environment. For students involved in afterschool activities and parents with complicated commutes, weekday boarding eliminates the need for numerous trips to campus on a daily basis.
While there’s no place exactly like home, the boys’ and girls’ Middle School dorms are full of family-style love. In the boys’ dorm, for example, house pop Scott Brown and his wife include the boarders in everything they do. “It’s a big, warm family where everybody feels at home,” Brown says. And, of course, that feeling of family is grounded in Christian Science. “The boys can work through any challenges they face with our support and the support of their ‘brothers,’” Brown adds.
Full-time Middle School boarders, both boys and girls, confirm Scott’s assessment of dorm life. “When you come to the dorm, you instantly have friends that feel like family,” one boarder says. Another notes, “Living in the dorm has taught me how to better express love, how to do things as a team, be myself, and share my qualities and what I have to offer.”
