Dr. Palmer’s Update: March 2010

Dr. Palmer’s Update: March 2010
March 5, 2010

Since 1899, when an Australian family sent notice that their son was on his way to Principia by boat, the world has been coming to Principia’s doorstep. While our admissions process has evolved quite a bit since then, we continue to value the multicultural mix of students at Principia.

In addition, we host a wide range of international perspectives each year through our speaker series. Recently, we’ve heard inspiring talks by Russian human-rights activist Oleg Kozlovsky and Emmanuel Jal, one of the world’s child soldiers known as the Lost Boys of Sudan.

In between the rich, full weeks of activity on the School and College campuses, Head of School Marilyn Wallace and I are enjoying the opportunity to bring Principia to your doorsteps with our Coast-to-Coast events. Last weekend we held gatherings in Houston and Dallas where we talked about what’s happening at Principia today. This weekend we look forward to crossing the border and sharing Principia news with friends in Toronto. A huge thank you to the local Principians who are helping coordinate, plan, and host these events.

Technology will enable us to reach out even more broadly later this spring through live web broadcasts scheduled for Sunday, April 25, 7:30-9:00 p.m. CDT and Friday, May 21, 8:00-9:30 p.m. CDT. These programs will be similar to our in-person Coast-to-Coast events, including brief remarks from Marilyn and me, a video showcasing current students, and live questions from the audience. Mark your calendars!

Planning is also underway for live web events this summer. Using this interactive technology, I look forward to providing a clear outline of our vision for bringing Principia to the world through online education, international expansion, and Master’s degree programs. These exciting initiatives have the potential to extend a Principia education worldwide while maintaining our focus on character development and the unique elements of Mary Kimball Morgan’s educational vision.

Amidst all of this wonderful activity, Principia continues to vigorously maintain its mission of serving the Cause of Christian Science. I recently received an inspiring message from a College student who is currently serving as a resident assistant: “This job has really held me to a higher metaphysical standard. I like that I get into an almost practitioner mode when metaphysically preparing for the day, or when having a conversation with someone. . . . Needless to say, I am loving the lessons I am learning in practicing Christian Science every day and metaphysically supporting others.” Me too!
